University of Utah Widtsoe & Cowles Buildings With Connecting Addition
Through a thoughtfully designed connecting addition, the project unites two of the University of Utah's most historically significant structures, the Widtsoe and LeRoy E. Cowles Buildings. Originally built in 1901 and 1967, respectively, both buildings underwent major renovations to address seismic deficiencies and modernize infrastructure while preserving architectural integrity.
The Cowles Building features restored brick and sandstone finishes, a new three-story addition for accessibility, and quiet graduate study spaces. The Widtsoe Building now includes upgraded classrooms, a new auditorium, and expanded faculty areas. A highlight is the Intermountain Healthcare Simulation Learning Center, a virtual hospital for interdisciplinary training. The connecting addition enhances circulation and collaboration between departments, blending historic charm with contemporary design. The buildings form a cohesive academic hub supporting advanced research, simulation-based learning, and graduate education.
