Thanksgiving Point's Butterfly Biosphere transformed the former Emporium retail and office building into an interactive museum focused on insects and hands-on learning. Opened in 2019, the facility includes a 10,000-square-foot tropical butterfly conservatory, the Costa Rica Climber, Discovery Zone, classrooms, and visitor amenities.
Reaveley provided structural engineering for the renovation and conservatory addition, including reinforced-concrete foundations, a special moment-frame lateral system in the flight area, and steel framing for elevated exhibit areas, ramps, stairs, and treehouse platforms. Structural modifications also included reinforcement of existing framing, new wall openings, and connections between new and existing construction.
By adapting usable building structure while accommodating a specialized glass-enclosed habitat and multi-level exhibits, the project expanded Thanksgiving Point's opportunities for year-round science education and family exploration.
