USU Manon Crane Russell / Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall

The visual centerpiece of Utah State University’s Caine School of the Arts, this performance hall is inspired by Utah’s mountains. The front of the building is wrapped in a zinc skin folded almost like origami. The bluish-gray metal contrasts with the concrete and alludes to the school’s surrounding peaks.

The facility is divided into three main sections: performance hall, glass enclosed lobby, and dressing rooms/green room. The focal point of the building, however, is the hall itself. The world-class, 421-seat venue has the flexibility to accommodate solo piano performances as well as larger theatrical groups. The key was creating an absolutely quiet room. To do so, 18-inch concrete walls were used, covered by five or six layers of drywall, topped by beech panels. To mold the room’s acoustics to fit whatever kind of performance might take place, a series of panels and curtains were installed, which can be moved to either dampen or amplify sound.
