The Public Works facility houses four departments: sanitation, public works, flood control, and fleet management. It contains administrative offices, mail and work areas, conference and training spaces, storage and support spaces, a crew space for sanitation personnel, an alternate emergency operations center, and parking to accommodate various programs of the center.
It is seismically safe and was built with conservation in mind. Building materials feature recycled glass, steel, and wood timbers from an old train trestle in the Great Salt Lake. The roof shape allows natural light to enter the building. Other sustainable features include measures to reduce water consumption by 60,000+ gallons per year and the inclusion of 99 photovoltaic panels on the roof providing clean renewable energy.
The building achieved LEED Platinum certification.
