HISTORIC RENOVATION

O.C. Tanner Flagship Retail Store Seismic Upgrade

Built in 1905, this historic Salt Lake City gem served as the city library for decades. The building was later turned into a planetarium, and interior architectural features of the library were removed to build a large star chamber. When the planetarium exhibits moved elsewhere, the building sat vacant until fine jeweler O.C. Tanner purchased it to use as their flagship retail store.

To meet the showcase vision of O.C. Tanner, the building was completely renovated and upgraded to honor the original design while creating a modern retail space. The star chamber was demolished and replaced with a new one-story concrete building for storage and mechanical space. The roof of this new structure serves as parking for the building.

The project included restoring the exterior stone cladding on all four sides of the building, a seismic upgrade, and a complete renovation of the historic interior—restoring woodwork, cast iron columns, plaster walls and ceilings, and the steel roof trusses.
