Reaveley

It isn’t every day you get to design a hospital on stilts. So Reaveley set the bar high for Alta View Hospital.

As the primary healthcare facility for Salt Lake valley’s southeast neighborhoods, Alta View Hospital opted to fully reconfigure and revitalize its existing campus. It needed more space for hospital services, updates for new technologies, plus greater visibility and appeal to its growing patient base. A four-story patient clinic, five-story patient tower, new basement central plant, and rooftop Life Flight helipad redefine the possibilities for community healthcare campuses.

The project posed significant challenges: a steeply sloping site and the need to keep the hospital functioning during construction. What’s more, Alta View is located in a high seismic area.

Reaveley’s structural solutions include bolted SidePlate connection for the steel movement frames. Not only did this first-of-its-kind application address high-seismic needs, the bolted connections could be erected in hours instead of days (a huge advantage for hospital operations). Custom plate girders support the new cantilevered addition which provides more space as well as a covered drop-off area for patients. The galleria concourse, new receiving dock corridor, and cantilevered public stair bring both beauty and functionality to Alta View Hospital—high goals, indeed.
